Adderall is one of the most commonly prescribed attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs. This drug can cause side effects like headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, weight loss, a bad taste in the mouth, tremors and vomiting. In a worst case scenario, it can cause hallucinations, while suddenly stopping it can cause depression and extreme fatigue. But treating ADHD can be far easy and without prescribed medication.

There are many natural Adderall alternatives to help to treat ADHD symptoms, these focus supplements are safe to use, and the better choice for a long-term period.

Zipfizz Healthy Energy Drink Mix

natural-substitute-adderall.jpg

Caffeine and similar stimulants can boost the frontal lobe of the brain while giving someone energy. For someone with mild ADHD, caffeine can be a natural substitute for Adderall. We recommend Zipfizz because it delivers many vital nutrients, as well. The influx of vitamins and nutrients helps the person offset any potential nutrient deficits that contribute to brain fog and exhaustion. It tastes good. You can drink several of the beverages throughout the day as required. You can mix it with whatever type of water or juice you prefer.

B-Complex Vitamins

A lack of vitamin B12 contributes to mental confusion, dementia, balance problems, mood disturbances, poor memory, and anemia. Anemia is guaranteed to cause fatigue. A deficiency of B1 causes short-term memory loss, fatigue, and irritability. Vitamin B2 is needed to convert other vitamins, especially B6, into something the body can utilize. B3 is used to convert food into energy, and a lack of it can cause circulation problems and fatigue. Vitamin B5 is used to create red blood cells, cholesterol, and neurotransmitters. A lack of this vitamin can cause burning sensations, depression, irritability, fatigue, stomach pains and an increased risk of becoming sick. Vitamin B7 is used to convert food into energy and make fatty acids, including those that make up the brain. Vitamin B9 is needed to make red blood cells and brain cells. A lack of this vitamin is linked to memory problems and gingivitis.

Vitamin B6 is needed to regulate more than a hundred enzymes in the body, including in the brain. If you don’t have enough of this vitamin in your system, it makes it difficult to concentrate. A lack of B6 or folic acid can cause confusion, depression, a weaker immune system, anxiety and mood swings. Conversely, a significant intake of it reduces the odds of neural tube defects during pregnancy and maximizes brain growth in children. However, those who lack folate probably lack other B-vitamins. This is why we recommend B-complex vitamins instead of merely a B6 supplement as natural alternatives to Adderall.

Beet Juice Powder

Beet juice powder is an over the counter Adderall alternative. Beet juice is one of the best sources of nitrates available to the public. That alone improves circulation, especially blood flow to the front or “executive” parts of the brain. This is the portion of the brain that compares the pros and cons of an action before you take it. Many of the behavioral problems associated with ADHD arise because the person acts on the impulse before the frontal cortex kicks in and warns the person not to do it.

A side benefit of consuming beet juice over time is that it lowers one’s odds of developing dementia and slows its progression. This is in part because the nitrites in it increase blood flow and thus the oxygen supply to the brain. You can get this nutrient through foods like celery and leafy green vegetables, but beets have the highest concentration of this nutrient of all commonly available foods.

Yerba Mate

Yerba mate is a healthy, good-tasting and reasonably priced over the counter natural Adderall alternative. It is stimulating, but it is relaxing as well. You can take it as a stimulant to improve focus and attention without suffering from physical tremors, anxiety or a racing heart. Yerba mate drinks can be bought pre-made in single-serve containers, or you can buy the leaves and brew it yourself as a tea. It contains more caffeine than coffee but more than tea.

A side benefit of yerba mate is that it delivers a hefty dose of anti-oxidants while improving mental focus. You get in trace minerals like potassium and zinc, too.

Choline Citrate

Choline citrate is one of the safest natural Adderall alternatives. But what is choline citrate? It is an essential nutrient that aids the removal of fat from around the liver, clears toxins from the body, and is a building block in the making of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. That brain chemical is necessary for forming memories, learning new skills, maintaining focus and problem-solving.

Some people may wonder why we recommend this supplement when it is a member of the B vitamin family. First, not all B-complex vitamins contain choline. Second, the citrate improves its uptake and effectiveness. Know that it isn’t advisable to consume this if you have problems with stomach acid production since this supplement could make that worse. If you develop muscle cramps or unexplained tension while taking it, stop immediately.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba stimulates the brain. It helps improve attention span, increase memory and reduces impulsive behavior. As we age, it slows the decline of mental function

Ginkgo has been used for literally thousands of years, so it is proven safe. It can be obtained over the counter in many pharmacies and herbal shops. Consider this a natural alternative to Adderall for mild ADHD, since it improves mental sharpness.

Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa Monnieri is the scientific name for water hyssop. It has been used in Indian herbal medicine for years. This is another herb that can be treated as an Adderall over the counter substitute. The herb interacts with the creation and maintenance of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. It improves focus, energy and mental alertness. And it does all of this without a stimulating effect that can leave people on ADHD drugs anxious, restless, agitated or unable to sit still.
This herb is better for those who suffer from hyperactivity more than inattention. Its somewhat calming effect can make things worse if your biggest problem is an inability to pay attention.

Caffeine

Caffeine is more than just a pick-me-up in the morning. As a central nervous system stimulant, it can be used as an alternative to stimulant drugs like Adderall. It can provide an emotional pick me up as well since it boosts dopamine production. The average person certainly has access to it in a variety of forms throughout the day, whether they prefer coffee, cola or energy drinks. It is an excellent choice for minimizing brain fog. Don’t consume it afternoon unless you want to risk trouble sleeping at night. Excessive caffeine consumption can be bad for kids. And while caffeine pills may be safer than Adderall, don’t give in to the temptation to let the kids drink many sugary sodas each morning and ruin their teeth because you hope it improves their behavior and grades.
Don’t use caffeine supplements if you have heart problems or take any other form of stimulant. For example, many over the counter diet drugs contain a stimulant to suppress appetite. If you take those pills, don’t take caffeine, too.

L-Theanine

L-theanine is a non-essential amino acid. It is naturally found in the leaves of Camellia sinensis. It is a safe Adderall alternative. One of the benefits of this option is that it doesn’t increase stress and anxiety the way other stimulants might. It works by increasing glycine and GABA levels in the brain, neurochemicals that offset hyperactivity. This amino acid can be safely used in conjunction with caffeine.  Its calming effect makes it an excellent choice for those who are more hyper than inattentive.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a member of the ginger family. Most people know it as the most flavorful ingredient in curry. It is also useful in medicine. The curcumin compounds are used to treat inflammation, auto-immune disorders, and digestive issues. It also has a beneficial effect on the brain, and we’re not just talking about the anti-oxidants slowing the effects of time and pollution on the brain. Curcumin boosts neurotrophic factors. Curcumin increases levels of “brain-derived neurotrophic factors,” a kind of growth hormone in the brain. Rising levels of this hormone reduce one’s risk of developing depression and Alzheimer’s. It improves memory, too.
Note that curcumin is not the same thing as cumin, though that’s also used in curry and shares similar medicinal properties.

Rhodiola Rosea

This is a Scandinavian herb. It doesn’t have the adverse side effects that ADHD drugs do. It can be taken to treat fatigue, brain fog and other forms of cognitive impairment. This herb has been linked to improvements in memory and mood, the latter because of its impact on serotonin and dopamine levels. It is a natural stimulant you can use in place of Adderall, though it hasn’t been studied in the specific treatment of ADHD.

St. John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort has been proven effective in treating minor to moderate depression. It is a natural mood-booster. If you find yourself scatter-brained due to chronic depression or anxiety, don’t take ADD or ADHD medication that can worsen anxiety or give you difficult to manage symptoms. Try St. John’s Wort instead. In fact, this herb will interact negatively with ADHD stimulant medications and SSRI based anti-depressants.

Fish Oil

Fish oil has many proven benefits for the brain. It slows the deterioration of our memory and advanced mental functions with age. It provides critical fatty acids like omega-3 to developing brains. If your child has ADHD, don’t assume that they need medication. Consider fish oil supplements to deliver these essential nutrients. For example, many children who are classified as having ADHD are merely less mature than their peers. (This is why the young children in a class are two to three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than the oldest.) Facilitate brain growth, and you could solve this problem. Why do we recommend fish oil overeating several servings of fish each week? Because it doesn’t taste like fish, and it will stimulate brain growth, reduce anxiety and depression and stabilize mood. You’re essentially giving your child the same fatty acids that are advertised on containers of baby formula, EPA, and DHA.

If you’re taking anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication, this supplement is a safe addition to your regimen.

Vitamin D

We’ve long known that Vitamin D was necessary to process calcium and build strong bone correctly. The more recent discovery has been how vital that mineral is to brain function. A lack of this vitamin makes ADHD and depression worse. This is probably why spending time outside in the sunshine is a natural mood booster.

About three-quarters of adults in the United States are deficient in Vitamin D., And not all of them can solve this deficiency with a walk in the sun. For others, the cold weather precludes getting enough time outside for the body to make this vitamin naturally. Tanning isn’t always an option, especially if you’re afraid of sunburn or skin cancer. If you’re taking medications that make you sensitive to sunlight, something those taking certain acne medications need to think of, then the only solution is Vitamin D supplements. And the rest of us probably need it anyway.

Note that this is a safe supplement to add to your diet if you’re taking ADHD medication or it is over the counter alternatives. Furthermore, vitamin D supplements are a good idea and safe supplement to take along with anxiety medication.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is used to create neurotransmitters and protects the brain. Phosphatidylserine aids in the formation and recall of memories. It lessens mood disorders like depression and anxiety. It is also a safe OTC Adderall alternative.

It reduces impulsivity control, one of the critical hallmarks of ADD / ADHD. It even improves auditory memory. Less specific are the studies that tentatively link it to improved mental processing in adults.

Summary

We’ve provided a long list of natural Adderall alternatives because we understand that what works for one person may not work for another. Many of these OTC Adderall alternatives offer many health benefits aside from improving focus, memory, self-control and overall brain function.
